Well, the reason I haven’t posted in just over a month is mainly because I bought a new motorcycle. I bought a ‘97 Yamaha YZF600R off of Jon, a co-worker. I rode it home on August 3rd, and have put about 3500 miles on it since then. I’m actually going to have to get new tires for it real soon now. So, if you haven’t heard from me for a while, that’s pretty much why… I love it! =)
I finally uploaded some my recent trip to Florida, if case anyone cares. =)
I’m looking for a new MP3 player. More specifically, I’m looking for something in the neighborhood of 1 GB that isn’t too small (I lose small things easily) and — most importantly — shows up as a mass storage device under Linux.
While I do have a subscription to the Yahoo! Music Unlimited service, I don’t really use it. I’m not interested in putting music on the MP3 player. What I do want to do, however, is put podcasts on it. I’m using Liferea on Fedora Core 5 to download the podcasts for me. It’d be nice to simply plug in the USB MP3 player and issue a “cp” to copy all the downloaded podcasts over, then disconnect it. I’m not interested in using Windows to do this so the mass storage route is the easiest to go.
I’m open to any suggestions and hearing of other’s experiences. Thanks!
LinuxWiz Consulting Relaunch
News, Networking, Security, Internet, Microsoft, Personal, Linux 1 Comment »One other thing that I’m going to do now that I’m back in Mitchell is to “relaunch” my consulting business, LinuxWiz Consulting. I stopped taking new clients and finished up my active projects months ago because a certain somebody complained that it took up too much of my time. That won’t be an issue anymore, so I’m going to start it back up. There’s some legal paperwork I’ll have to take care to operate in this county again, but nothing major. Hopefully within the next 30 days or so, LinuxWiz Consulting will be back in full-swing!
I haven’t posted for two weeks now, I was on vacation the last time I did, so I thought I’d give a quick summary of my vacation. I flew from Indianapolis to Tampa where I was picked up on a Wednesday. We hit up a bunch of local restaurants, pubs, and bars and consumed lots of alcohol. There was swimming, of course, and visiting the “touristy” stuff. We headed over to Daytona to watch the launch of the space shuttle (which was postponed, so we missed it) and watched the Pepsi 400 NASCAR race (Firecracker 400, if you prefer).
Now I’m back in Indiana, and have been moved from Bloomington back to my hometown of Mitchell. I moved to Bloomington a little over a year ago so that Lindsey and I could live together and it was clear a while ago that the whole relationship thing just wasn’t working. I’m now back in Mitchell and getting settled back in. I’ve now went from 10-minute commute to work back to about a 45-minute commute, but that doesn’t really bother me. I drove this route for years, so I’m pretty used to it. And I save a helluva lot of money living down here as opposed to Bloomington.
This town — Mitchell, Indiana — is a complete waste of land. There’s nothing here. What little industry was here has long since moved out (with a few small exceptions). More importantly, in my opinion, is that there are no recreational activities here, especially for the kids. A year or two ago, the city got a grant to build a large new playground directly behind the swimming pool, but that’s about it. The teenagers lucky enough to have access to vehicles generally get out of this town as much as they can. When I was a teenager, we had skating rinks and bowling alleys and such, and there “wasn’t anything to do then”. I can’t imagine how the kids here these days feel.
I’m going to try to do something to change that. I’m relatively well-known to our elected officials here, as this is a pretty small town (population ~4500, I think). I also have lots of younger relatives who I constantly hear complain that “there’s nothing to do”. Extracurricular activities at the schools are dwindling, from what I hear, and in the summertime there’s simply nothing to do.
It was the same way 10+ years ago when I ran around this town, and it mostly leads to kids getting into trouble. Right now it’s summertime, so there’s the usual little league baseball and such. There isn’t, however, any popular activities to occupy the kids’ time.
I remember reading reports that most kids who get in trouble do so between the hours of 3pm and 10pm. This is the time period directly after school lets out for the day. There are now more single-parent families than ever and lots of these kids come home from school to an empty house. The lack of supervision and activities leads to them getting into trouble.
I’m no superman and I can’t perform miracles, but I’m going to start getting active in this community and see if I can’t do something to help this place out.
We’re getting ready to jump in the car and head across Florida! We’ve been staying in Indian Rocks Beach on the west coast, but we’re heading over to Daytona shortly…
The space shuttle is scheduled to launch at 3:50pm today, but from what I’m seeing on MSNBC I’m not sure if that’s going to happen or not. I’d really LOVE to see it, though, so I hope they get to launch.
Then, this evening, we’ll be at Daytona International Speedway to watch the Pepsi 400. The only other NASCAR race I’ve been to is the Brickyard 400, which I’ve been told is nothing compared to Daytona. I guess I’ll find out!!
Well, I made it. Right now I’m on I-275 passing near Madeira Beach. Lindsey and Megan drove me to Indianapolis where my AirTran flight 411 left a couple minutes late. Of course we then arrived about 10 minutes late, too.
Even better, they then made us sit on the taxiway for about 15 minutes because another plane was at our gate. And then it took ‘em roughly 35 minutes to get the luggage off the plane and onto the belt.
First time I’ve flown on AirTran and I imagine it’ll be the last…
Looks like I’m going to Florida again and I can’t wait. I haven’t been since the last time Lindsey and I went on Spring Break, about 15 months ago.
I met my mother for lunch at Tumbleweedon Thursday and she said that her and her fiancee were heading out on Friday to go down there. We used to go there a lot when I was younger, we have some family down there and such. Anyways, she called me last night to let me know that they made it safely and we were just yakkin’ and she said “you oughta to take a couple days off work and fly down here”. After thinking about it for a minute or so, I agreed.
So, I headed over to Orbitz and booked me a flight. I’m leaving Wednesday afternoon, heading to the Indianapolis International Airport, and landing at Tampa International Airport two hours later.
I guess I’m going to stay at the same place they are, Sea Club Condominiums and spent some time on vacation. I haven’t had a “real” vacation since we went on Spring Break last year and I could really use one, especially since Lindsey and I just split up (for good).
Beach, here I come!
I’m trying out the web browser on this new Blackberry to see how much of a PITA it is to post to my web site. Of course, it’d be a heckuva lot easier if there was a cool little client for it that supported XML-RPC!
Take “Security Now” off the list of podcasts that I listen to. I listened to episode #42 today and that was enough to take me over the edge. Steve Gibson is such a f**kin’ retard… listening to him explain “how NAT works” today had me cussin’ out loud to no one. I’m not quite sure how to articulate what I’m thinking about him at the moment, but I’ve removed “Security Now” from my aggregator. Enough of that shit…
